No one likes to think about it, much less talk about it, but the fact remains that if you own a BMW, Mercedes, or nearly any vehicle built between 2002-2015, this applies to you. In all, 19 different automakers have had to recall their vehicles using the Takata company’s front airbags for both the passenger and driver sides. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has called this “the largest and most complex safety recall in U.S. history.” At the heart of the problem is that the airbag’s inflation mechanism, which is a metal cartridge loaded with propellant wafers, in some cases has ignited with explosive force, causing injury and even killing car occupants in some cases.
