One of the first things that can be annoying if the alternator is going bad is the engine control unit will turn on the battery light and leave it on. This dashboard warning light can draw your attention away from the road when it is shining all the time. Here are other problems caused by a bad alternator.
Annoying Accessory Problems
You may find yourself getting frustrated because your vehicle’s power accessories are not working properly. For example, you may go to adjust your power seat and it will move. The radio may also turn off by itself and refused to turn back on. These are just two examples of accessory problems.
Annoying Battery Problems
You may also find yourself frustrated because you have had to jump-start your battery frequently. Unfortunately, you have to do this to get your automobile started even though the battery is not too old. This is a sign that the alternator is not producing enough electricity to keep the battery charged.
Annoying Light Problems
The headlights, taillights, and interior lights may start to flicker if the alternator cannot produce a consistent stream of electricity. They may also get so dim that it is hard to see at night. You may also be blinded by bright lights if the alternator is producing too much electricity.
Annoying Spark Plug Problems
You finally got your engine started and you are sitting at an idle. You can hear the engine misfiring. Suddenly it stalls. This is a sign that the alternator is also failing to send enough electricity to the spark plugs. Consequently, they are misfiring in the cylinders.
Grinding/Growling/Whining
An alternator can wear out internally. When this happens, it makes grinding or growling sounds. The alternator is attached to the serpentine belt to produce power. If the serpentine belt is having problems spinning, it may squeal or whine in the engine.
Overheating Electrical System
Finally, we mentioned above that your lights will be extremely bright if the alternator is producing too much electricity. This can also overheat the electrical system and blow fuses. You may be able to smell the electrical system overheating in the engine.
